On January 31, 2009
live from the MGM Grand Garden Area in Los Vegas
Nevada the UFC will feature historic match. The
lightweight champion BJ Penn will challenge the
welterweight champion George St Pierre for his
title.
Georges St-Pierre Vs. BJ Penn II
St. Pierre is 18-2 in MMA with a loss via submission
at UFC 50 to Matt Hughes and a TKO due to strikes at
the hands of
Matt Serra in
UFC 69. In both cases St. Pierre won the
rematches in rather dominating fashion.
St. Pierre beat B.J. Penn in a close decision at
UFC 58 and
many people feel the fight could have gone Penn’s
way as well. Since then, aside from the Serra loss,
St. Pierre is riding the peak of his career and
seems
to be at his absolute best. His last fight against
Jon Fitch, the top Welterweight contender showed
that he is in a class of his own.
B.J. Penn on the other hand sits atop the
Lightweight division with the only real challenger
remaining being Kenny Florian who is on a six fight
win streak. B.J. Penn is 13-4-1 lifetime in MMA and
in his four losses
three have gone to a decision.
Penn is one of the top BJJ fighters in the UFC, but
he's very balanced, with five knockouts, five
submissions and three decision wins on his resume.
This Fight has Excitement All Over It.....
Georges St. Pierre is starting out as a -245
favorite, while B.J. Penn is a +175 underdog.
For those not entirely familiar with how betting
lines work, this means that a successful $100 wager
on B.J. Penn would make you $175 in profit. On the
other hand, you would need to wager $245 on Georges
St. Pierre to give yourself a chance at winning $100
of profit back. So obviously, GSP is quite a big
favorite in this fight.
Also, feature on the card is undefeated Lyoto
Machida , fan favorite Stephan Bonnar, and Karo
Parisysn. To finish to Main Card off, Lightweights
Nate Diaz and Clay Guida are set to square off.
Diaz and Guida were originally booked to fight this
year but a foot injury suffered by Guida resulted in
the matchup being pushed back to the UFC 94 main
card, which is headlined by Georges St-Pierre vs. BJ
Penn.
Diaz, a cast member on
The Ultimate
Fighter 5, captured the reality series’
lightweight tournament crown in mid-2007 with a
victory over Manny Gamburyan. After winning his next
three-straight fights
over Junior Assuncao, Alvin Robinson, and Kurt
Pellegrino all via submission, Diaz bested Josh Neer
at UFC Fight Night 15 in September via split
decision.
Among the most popular lightweights for his all out
fighting style, Guida, a former Strikeforce
lightweight champion, went just 2-3 in his first
five fights inside the octagon. However,
most-recently “The Carpenter” has rebounded to win
back-to-back fights over Mac Danzig and Samy Schiavo.
