Silva, however,
represents a significant step up in class. The
Brazilian is 7-0 in the UFC, with only three of
those fights reaching the second round. Anderson
Silva is seen by many UFC fans, as the best
pound-for-pound MMA fighter on the planet, a
reputation he enhanced July 19 by dispatching
light-heavyweight James (The Sandman) Irvin in 61
seconds in a bout contested at 205 pounds.
Cote, (14-4) fighting out of Montreal, Quebec,
Canada, is on a four fight win streak in the
Octagon, beginning his string of excellence back in
February of 2007 with a decision win over Scott
Smith at UFC 67. Six months later, he TKO'd Kendall
Grove in the first round at UFC 74, and followed
that up with a first round TKO over and Drew
McFedries at UFC Fight Night in January 2008. But it
was his most recent victory, a pivotal win over
Ricardo Almeida at UFC 86 on July 5th that propelled
him to number one contender status. Now Cote has the
opportunity to join countryman Georges St-Pierre as
a current Canadian UFC titleholder by taking out
reigning champion Silva at UFC 90.
Diego Sanchez vs. Thiago Alves
Thiago Alves (15-3 MMA, 8-2 UFC), who most recently
defeated contenders Karo Parisyan and Matt Hughers,
this latest booking would be another crack at a
top-10 opponent. For Diego Sanchez (19-2 MMA, 8-2
UFC), it would be his biggest opportunity to prove
he's back to his top form.
Alves, who hasn't lost since a second-round TKO
defeat to Jon Fitch in August 2006, most recently
fought and defeated Hughes in a late-booked main
event for UFC 85. Despite failing to make weight
(claiming an ankle injury he said he suffered in the
days before the fight), Alves dominated all aspects
of the bout, eventually forcing a second-round TKO
stoppage due to strikes.
He has sixth consecutive victory in the UFC, which
has included wins over Parisyan, Chris Lytle and
John Alessio. Of his eight UFC wins, seven have come
via knockout.
Sanchez, meanwhile, will look to continue the
momentum of back-to-back victories over David
Bielkheden and Luigi Fioravanti. After beginning his
career with 17 consecutive victories to emerge as a
top contender, Sanchez suffered a unanimous-decision
loss to Josh Koscheck (though Sanchez was dealing
with a staph infection)
and then a split-decision loss to Fitch.
Shannon Gugerty vs. Spencer Fisher
Shannon Gugerty (11-2) will likely replace Melvin
Guillard and face Spencer Fisher (21-4) At UFC 90 on
Oct. 25 from the Allstate Arena in Chicago,
Illinois.
Gugerty made a successful UFC debut at UFC Fight
Night “Silva vs. Irvin” by submitting Dale Hartt in
the first round.
Spencer Fisher is coming off of an impressive win
over the young Jeremy Stephens and Guillard is
coming of a brutal KO of Denis Siver.
The mixed martial arts fight card at Allstate Arena
is the first for the UFC in the Windy City. which
takes place Oct. 25 at the Allstate Arena near
Chicago.
The UFC had purposely avoided Chicago because until
recently, the state did not regulate mixed martial
arts. However, minor tweaks in the state law now
gives the Illinois Athletic Commission the authority
to
sanction MMA events.

on the counter-attack.
